Yes, I will attend both home and hospital births.  I have given birth to 5 children, 3 of them in the hospital and 2 of them at home with midwives.  I will support mom wherever she is most comfortable.

Training & Credentials

What are your current credentials & individual experiences with doula care & labor support?

Birth doula – ToLabor trained  October  2010

Post partum doula  - DONA trained June 2011

Do you have any current plans for additional training?

I am currently pursuing my birth and post partum certifications.

Do you provide breastfeeding support & what is your basic theory of breastfeeding?

Yes, I provide breastfeeding support.  I believe that breast milk is best for babies where no complications prevent this. Even some complications are able to be worked through when one is persistent. Successful breastfeeding needs plenty of support and encouragement and is greatly beneficial for both mom and baby!

Do you typically provide postpartum support to your clients?

Post partum support in the first days after birth would be provided in my birth doula role.  I also provide more comprehensive care during the first 12 weeks after birth as a post partum doula.

If yes to the previous question; for how long & what do you feel are your strong points in this area?

I would help mom through the initial period of breastfeeding in the hospital, check on her when she arrives home and  again within a week or two later.  Certainly I would be available to answer questions any time by phone or email during this time.  For more prolonged post partum care I would be glad to negotiate the provision of services as needed.

Are you open to trading or bartering for services

Yes,  if this would help a mom be able to have doula support

Will you provide a sliding fee for lower income couples?

Yes.  I think all moms who desire birth support should have the opportunity to gain it.

Final Words From Mary Ann

I am passionate about mothering in all its aspects – especially birth, breastfeeding.  Each of my 5 births taught me something new about the awesome process of birth and the marvelous way a woman’s body is created to nurture her baby both inside and outside her womb.  My first three births were hospital births and my last two were at home with a lay midwife.  My first birth in the hospital ended with a forceps delivery.  As I became more confident in my body’s ability to birth I chose to birth at home. I think it is possible through educating yourself and gathering a good support team to plan the birth you would like to experience.  Surround yourself with people who believe in your body’s ability to birth.

Having spent many of my early years of mothering being supported by LaLeche League,  I became a leader and worked with moms to help them successfully breastfeed their babies.  Now that my children are at the age of beginning their own families I am combining my passion for mothering with my doula training to help other women find joy and fulfillment in these most feminine experiences of life – birth and nurturing their baby.
