Training & Credentials

What are your current credentials & individual experiences with doula care & labor support?

I grew up in a homebirth household.  I was blessed to be able to watch the births of 3 of my younger siblings who were born at home.  We “helped” as much as kids can do.  Since having my own kids I have just helped out at a few friends’ births.

Do you have any current plans for additional training?

I will be attending training in the summer and more as I get the time to.

Do you provide breastfeeding support & what is your basic theory of breastfeeding?

For sure.  I am currently a WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counselor.  I have been doing this since 2006 when my first daughter was very little.  I believe that most women CAN successfully breastfeed.  Of course we all need plenty of support.  I have a huge passion for helping people when it comes to breastfeeding.

Do you typically provide postpartum support to your clients?

Of course!  I believe this is so important for all of us.  We all  need to help one another out, this is why I think having postpartum support is so necessary.

If yes to the previous question; for how long & what do you feel are your strong points in this area?

Really for however long it is needed.  Again, I think support is so important.  I always like to encourage new moms to go to different support groups as well.  One of my strong points is being able to connect people together.  I know a lot of people and when I think that someone should meet another person that I know, I make sure they get connected to one another.

Will you provide a sliding fee for lower income couples?

Miscellaneous Information

How many times do you typically meet with couples prior to attending their birth?

Answers coming soon

Do you provide a "whole house labor rehearsal" for your couples?

Yes if wanted

Do you guarantee backup services in case you are unable to attend due to illness or sudden conflicts?

If not, would you encourage your couple to find a 2nd choice doula for backup?

I would encourage finding a 2nd choice in case of a sudden conflict.

If it felt "right" to you & your client, would you ever consider working as a team with another beginning doula to help her gain experience?

Yes

Is it ok for other doulas to contact you to help secure their own reliable backup?

Yes

How do you honestly feel about attending a birth for a couple you have never met either as a last minute doula or backup doula?

I think the benefits of having a doula present at the birth are so high, that even if it was a last minute birth for someone I didn’t know, it would be worth it.

How do you describe yourself religiously?

I have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.

How does your religion effect how you work with clients?

I believe God made our bodies to birth and breastfeed our babies.  So many people in our society have gotten so far away from that, but we need to realize HE made us with perfect bodies to be able to birth our babies, and breastfeed them.

Do you provide a doula contract for detailed expectations of your care to be signed by all parties?

We could talk about this when the need came up

Have you ever worked with same sex couples?

I have not, but I have friends who are same sex couples so I am open to this.

Final Words From April

Like I mentioned earlier, my mom had 4 out of 6 of us at home.  I was the first homebirth and 3 of my younger siblings were also born at home.  I really feel that this prepared me for my passion that came about after having my own children.  I remember in Jr. High & High School when we would talk about pregnancy and birth (The tiny bit of time we even talked about it), and when others were talking about c-sections and epidurals and all of that, I was talking about placentas and homebirths.  I remember being shocked to watch a “birth video” that showed an epidural and I thought “THAT is not normal.”  I am really glad that my mom taught us that birth is a normal process and we CAN do it.

When I became pregnant with my first child, I was living in Chicago.  I did not know a lot of people besides friends that were studying and did not know anything about having children.  Luckily I was able to come across an amazing group that is just as passionate about birth as I am!  Through this group I really feel that I was able to grow and learn so much more about birth.  My daughter Ailani was born in Chicago in my apartment with amazing midwives.  My son Jaylen was born at home here in Nebraska.  Both of my kids were waterbirths as well.

Another thing about me is I have a HUGE passion for the Hispanic culture.  I lived in Ecuador for 2 years when I was 18 and again when I was 21.  That is how I learned Spanish.  I get very frustrated when I see so many Hispanic moms that come to the states and think that they “have” to get an epidural to have the “American” birth experience.  I would love to be able to especially help a Hispanic mom.

Besides just Hispanics, I think that I am able to relate to many other cultures, since I lived abroad.

I work very part time as a WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counselor.  I provide breastfeeding support to WIC moms.  Most   of the time however I am just with my two kids, trying to keep my own sanity!  We like to be outside and go to festivals.  I am a huge people person too.
